Your X bookmarks aren't an archive

I used to treat my X bookmarks like a library. A thread on pricing, a long post about hiring, a screenshot of someone's onboarding flow: tap the bookmark icon and it's mine, filed away for the day I need it.
Then I needed one. I opened my bookmarks, scrolled back a few months and found a grey box where the post used to be: This post is unavailable. No text, no images, no author. Just the fact that I had once thought it was worth keeping.
A bookmark is a pointer, not a copy
When you bookmark a post, X doesn't save the post for you. It saves a reference to it, a note that says "this account bookmarked post 1834…". Every time you open your bookmarks, X looks up each of those posts again and shows you whatever is there today.
That works perfectly right up until the post changes or disappears. Then your bookmark points at nothing.
Why posts disappear
There's rarely any drama behind it. Posts vanish for ordinary reasons:
- The author deletes it. People clean up old posts, delete threads that did badly, or wipe their whole history with a script.
- The account goes away. Deactivated, suspended or renamed and left to expire: every post from that account goes with it.
- The account goes private. Protected posts only show to approved followers. If that isn't you, your bookmark stops working.
- Media gets pulled. An image or video can be removed after a copyright claim while the text stays, which is often the part you saved it for.
None of these tell you first. You find out months later, at exactly the moment you went looking.
The usual workarounds, and where they fall short
Screenshots keep what you saw, but they're images. You can't search them, copy a sentence out of them or click the links inside, and a long thread becomes a stack of cropped pictures in your camera roll.
The Wayback Machine is wonderful for the open web, but X pages need JavaScript and often a login to render, so a snapshot of a post frequently comes back empty or as a login wall.
Copying into a notes app works if you're disciplined. Most of us aren't, and the images, the author and the date usually get left behind.
What a real archive needs
Thinking about what I actually wanted from my bookmarks, the list was short:
- The full text, stored on my side, not looked up from X every time.
- The images, saved as files, not as links to X's servers.
- Who wrote it and when, so a quote still has its source.
- Search, folders and somewhere to write down why I saved it.
- Private by default. A bookmark is a note to yourself, not a public post.
That list is what I built mark around. You paste a link (or drag it in), and mark saves the post's text, images, author and date into your own archive. If the author deletes it next week, your copy doesn't notice.
Start with the posts you'd hate to lose
You don't need to archive everything. Open your bookmarks and pick the ten posts you'd genuinely miss: the thread you send to every new hire, the reference you keep coming back to. Save those first.
If you just want a quick copy of one post today, the free Post to Markdown tool turns it into text you can paste anywhere, and Post screenshot makes a clean image of it. Neither needs an account.
Whatever you use, keep your own copy. The post you bookmarked is only borrowed.
