How it's counted
Reading time uses 238 words a minute, the average for adults reading non-fiction, or 200 and 300 for slow and fast readers. Reading aloud uses 150. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters each count as one word.

We pull the main text from the page and skip menus, headers, footers and sidebars. Open "Text we counted" to see exactly what was measured. Pages that build their content with JavaScript may come back empty; paste the text instead.
Images
With images on, each picture adds time the way Medium does it: 12 seconds for the first, one second less for each after, and 3 seconds from the tenth on.
Privacy
Pasted text is counted in your browser and never leaves it. For links, we fetch the page once and don't store it.
